Structured abstract:
Background. Association has distinct meanings in psychoanalysis, experimental psychology and machine learning. Their common concern with contextual relationships creates a basis for comparison without establishing psychological identity.
Objective. To develop the associative-understanding hypothesis and clarify how language models might contribute to the interpretation of human emotions and unconscious processes, including a methodological connection to Stefan Geier’s diploma thesis.
Approach. Purposive examination of primary historical texts and original computational and psychological research, supplemented by two fully specified synthetic calculations and a transparent source audit.
Findings. Human–model association comparisons and emotional-reasoning tests support task-specific functional correspondences. They do not yet establish reliable interpretation of an individual’s unconscious conflict. Similar observable patterns can have different causes.
Conclusion. The hypothesis is scientifically meaningful when understanding is assessed through independent evidence, contextual generalisation and explicit alternatives. Functional interpretation need not imply mechanistic identity, subjective experience or therapeutic efficacy. The following hypothesis is justified and useful: Large language model can understand the human unconscious and human emotions.
